Cryolipolysis explained
Cooling triggers a delayed response in treated fat.
The applicator uses vacuum to draw an appropriate fold of subcutaneous fat into the cup and cools it in a controlled cycle. Cold injury is intended to damage fat cells, which are cleared gradually; that process is not instantaneous and does not treat visceral fat.
Body shape, applicator fit and the device used all affect outcome. Cryolipolysis is cosmetic contouring, not obesity care, and it cannot tighten loose skin in the way surgery can.

The treated area can enlarge instead of shrink.
Paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH) creates a firm bulge in the shape of the applicator, usually months later. It does not resolve by itself and may require surgery; this belongs in consent, however uncommon it is.
What recovery can look like
Normal short-term effects and complications are different.
Redness, swelling, bruising, aching, tenderness, tingling, numbness and small temporary lumps may occur. Numbness can persist for weeks. A realistic review waits for the delayed cooling response rather than judging the area immediately.
Freeze burns, prolonged nerve symptoms, PAH and aggravation of a hernia are less common but consequential. Contact the Glasgow team about severe or increasing pain, blistering, darkening or broken skin, weakness, a new persistent lump or a firm enlarging bulge.

Who is Fat Freezing for?
It may suit an adult with a stable weight and a limited, pinchable subcutaneous area. It is not designed for obesity, visceral fat, significant loose skin or a medical cause of swelling or body change.
Which health issues matter most?
Cryoglobulinaemia, cold agglutinin disease, paroxysmal cold haemoglobinuria, cold urticaria and other cold-sensitivity disorders can make treatment unsafe. Hernias, poor circulation, nerve problems, pregnancy, wounds and recent surgery also require screening.
What is paradoxical adipose hyperplasia?
PAH is delayed growth of firm fatty tissue in the treated shape, generally noticed two to five months after cooling. It does not disappear without treatment and corrective surgery may be needed.
How quickly can I judge a result?
Tissue response evolves over weeks, so early swelling or numbness is not a result. Review timing depends on the protocol, and photographs should use consistent lighting, posture and timing.
Can treatment freeze or burn my skin?
Yes. A freeze burn is an uncommon but recognised complication and can be serious. Correct device use and skin protection reduce risk but do not make it zero.
Is an applicator the same as a body area?
Not always. One cup covers a defined section, and an area such as both flanks involves at least two sides. Safe placement and anatomy determine the true count.
What changes after treatment need advice?
Contact the clinic promptly about blisters, broken or darkening skin, severe pain, weakness, symptoms that worsen rather than settle, or a hard enlargement developing in later months. Seek urgent care for severe illness.
